Another post about shiny things. March 29, 2007

Filed under: In Love, The Boy — Clink @ 11:19 am

Are you sick of me talking about rings yet? What’s that? Yes? Oh. Well in that case, let’s discuss something else.

Um…

So, yeah.

How bout that weather?

Right.

So…

OK FINE I HAVE NOTHING ELSE OF WHICH TO SPEAK. WRITE. TYPE. WHATEVER.

Yesterday, my boyfriend wrote me a very short, very sweet email about his day. Fairly generic when it comes to boyfriend emails. Then he threw in this line, at the bottom, all casual-like, as if reading it WOULDN’T CAUSE MY HEART TO STOP BEATING FOR LONGER THAN MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS WOULD ADVISE:
“How about some ring-browsing on Saturday. What do you think?”

What do I think? WHAT DO I THINK? I think holy omigod is what I think. Going ring shopping with a friend is one thing. Going ring shopping with the person who is ultimately going to give you that ring, on a bended knee, while he proclaims his undying love and devotion to the amazingness that is you…well, that’s quite another.

Also, it’ll give me the opportunity to try on this ring:

I keep going back to it, ever since a friend emailed me the link. She was all “it’s so you!” and I was all “pfffft, I’ve already found my ring, lady” and then, after some time, I was like “why do I keep clicking on the link and staring longingly into the diamond abyss that is this ring.”

So yeah. Might be good to try it on and see if maybe I’ve had a wee change of heart.

I’m slightly nervous. I don’t know why. Ring shopping with M is big. It’s something I’ll remember forever. It’s the first step on the road to FOREVER AND EVER, AMEN and I don’t even know what I’m going to wear. What does one wear ring-shopping?

Also, I’m opening up the floor to which ring you like better. Ultimately I’ll decide for myself – of course – but hey, give me your opinion. (Do not, however, give me your damn opinion on what a superficial bitch I am because two posts about rings! In the same week! WHORE!) Do you like the one above? Or the one from this post?

On that note, I’m off to do something other than think about rings because even I have hit my limit.

Ascher cut? Brilliant cut? Whatever style that ring is, it’s BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

i’m gonna go with the one from the first post. my friend has one that looks like the one in this post and, well, it doesn’t scream ‘wedding ring’ to me. it’s really pretty, but it sort of seems more like a right hand ring instead of an engagement ring. and i also like the thicker band on the first ring. so yeah, there’s my two cents. :)

  3. J Says:

Definitely this one!! Cushion cut? Tiffany Legacy, right? How lovely . . .

I like the one from the old post better. And more than channel set, if I may make a suggestion, I like a pave band (similar to the band on the ring in this post). More delicate - makes the center stone stand out more. Channel set may look a bit diamondy (not a word to everyone else, but it is to someone who is ring-shopping). I do like the one in this post, but it just seems too trendy and popular. The other ring is more timeless and classic, in my opinion.

I just went ring shopping last year and learned a lot so I thought I’d share!

I like this one. And although I can’t help but be slightly, no, VERY jealous of you right now, I am also happy for you. This is big, Clink!

I like shiny things and would never suggest you stop talking about them.

My situation is much different than yours, probably. I come from a background of very little money; so did my then-fiance. He was 3000 miles away from me then but wanted to get me a ring, though he was adraid of doing this without me there.

I said (mindful of his fear and finaces): no diamonds please (everyone else has them—that’s just me, your mileage may vary); no rubies or emeralds (too expensive and cheap ones *look* cheap); other colored stones okay; prefer white to yellow gold; like filigree (he didn’t even know what this was); antique or estate pieces much appreciated (I have a great passion for history).

So he picked the perfect ring for me, despite an antique dealer trying to talk him out of it (”She’ll hate that, women always want diamonds”). White-gold filigree, a pale aquamarine scissors-cut stone from about 1880.

It’s not an expensive stone but it has an inner coolness that looks like a pale mountain cloud. The white gold has a warmth not seen in modern white-gold metal. The warm silvery ring sets off the stone in an almost magical way.

It made me happy that he listened; it made me happy that he could afford it; and there’s nothing like it on any hand, anywhere.

Worth considering, but ultimately it’s up to you both.

Like your blog. M. sounds sweet. Enjoy the shopping!

I like the style of the first one better, personally, as I’m a fan of round-cut or oval-cut stones. Hulk and I ring shopped for about a year, off and on, before he found my ring and proposed February 15. I got butterflies in my belly every time we looked at rings. Of course, for the first six months it was more “just to see what options there are” and then it was “just to see what looks good on your finger” and then he went and bought the thing online and I wouldn’t have had any way to try it on anyhow. He did want it to be a surprise (though I’d given him my preferences - no yellow gold, rounder stone, no diamonds or emeralds, don’t spend too much money). And it was - I thought he’d have something made in titanium, though I wasn’t thrilled with the idea of a tension setting (too modern for my taste) but he ended up finding a claddagh with an oval sapphire rather than a heart-shape in white gold, and I love it to pieces. We’ll probably get matching titanium wedding bands, and I’ll have to wear mine on my right hand, but that’s OK - I could wear the claddagh alone as a wedding ring as well.

Enjoy the ring shopping - I can’t give advice on what to wear, since I wore whatever and we’d just pop into jewelry stores here and there, and I live in Denver, not NYC. Is there a dress code for ring shopping in New York?

  8. alissa Says:

Oh! That was one of the rings that I marked as a potential - however, my sisters pointed out to me that it’s SO trendy right now and I’m going to vote for the first one because it’s classy, just like you.

  9. Hollie Says:

I work in the high end jewelry industry and love the ring talk. I just got mine this year. It’s an Elara, http://www.elaradiamonds.com and I love it! Especially look at the side views. Mine is gorgeous and blingy and perfect. I had two others picked out, but this was the one.

    Congratulations! And good luck!

  10. amanda Says:

Personally, I’m not a big engagement ring person..I like to garden, rock climb, ride bikes and get my hands dirty (ok, i’m a tomboy)

I think it’s silly to have your partial downpayment on a house sitting on your finger…

BUT..i love the second one because it’s different..i hope you’re not planning on joining the soccer mom club where everyone has to have the same solitare..boring, boring, boring…

The second one is kind of old fashioned and classic but not what everyone has..your engagement ring doesn’t have to be a big fat solitare (granted, the second one is pretty BIG and FAT) but i like that it’s different…but very elegant

  11. erin Says:

I like the one in the old post better. But that’s just me. But I will agree that the 2nd one is more old-fashioned and a bit different from what most women have these days.

    Good luck choosing an outfit!

  12. Cath Says:

I’m with Amanda - the second one is more unique and is very classy in a 1930s kind of way. And if it’s the one you’re clicking back to more, well, doesn’t that say it all?

So exciting! And a great excuse to buy a new outfit…

  13. Beverly Says:

My vote is for the 2nd one shown, but really I think it depends on what it looks like on your finger. Practice wearing it. Flip your hair, grab for stuff out of your purse, button a shirt, etc - just see what it looks like in normal life.

I would wear something cute. Not night-on-the-town cute, but maybe brunch-with-a-friend-I-haven’t-seen-in-a-while cute. Does that help at all?

  14. metamorphose Says:

I really like this ring -more than the one in your other post.

Holy crap if my boyfriend just casually suggested ring shopping -I’d be FLIPPING OUT!

THIS IS SO EXCITING! Yay for Clink!!!!!!

  15. Krista Says:

I’m a solataire girl myself, so my vote would be for the previous one. I think you should totally check out how the second one looks on, and then try it on with potential wedding bands (if you want to wear both on one hand). A girl I work with has a simple band on her left, then a beautiful three stone emerald cut on her right. Just potential things to think about. Yay engagements and matrimonies!

  16. Karina Says:

I like the one from the first post, less I dunno liable to cause traffic accidents. The other one is just too big for my taste, but that’s me.

  17. sandra Says:

I like this one better — but maybe with a thicker band?
