Happy Thanksgiving. November 21, 2007

Filed under: In general — Clink @ 12:16 am

It’s 11:09pm on Tuesday. I have another hour of work ahead of me tonight, and fifteen straight days of work behind me (including working until 10pm both Saturday and Sunday).

I’m not complaining. I’m really not. Because, for the first time ever, I love my job. I love my boss. I love everything about what I do.

I was recently recruited by another company. A guy with a sexy British accent called and lured me into a meeting. He pulled out the big guns: a bigger paycheck, a staff position, a sexy title. Sensing my reluctance, he then whipped out a freelancer’s kryptonite: health insurance.

And yet, I didn’t buckle.

Granted, the offer is still on the table - at least until after Thanksgiving - but I don’t know if I’m going to take it. (That sound you hear is my parents sobbing over the fact that their daughter is refusing a job with health insurance, omigod, where did we go wrong?)

I love what I’m doing. I’m happy. I feel appreciated. I feel valuable.

This is a first (sadly).

I’m relishing it.

So, Thanksgiving. I haven’t even had time to be excited about it because, well, see above, but it is so my favorite holiday. I mean, I know there were Pilgrims and Indians and something about thanks but when it gets down to it, the damn holiday pretty much just celebrates food.

By around 7pm on Thursday evening, my thighs will be crying out for mercy but I will still probably have another slice of pumpkin pie because that’s just how I roll (plus: there are always Spanx to hide any extra pudge! Woo!)

For the first time ever, I am actually staying in the city to watch the parade. Usually I half-watch it from the comfort of my home but this time M and I are going to brave the elements.

Luckily, the parade literally goes right by our building so, um, if those elements get too harsh we can always just run upstairs and drink hot cocoa and watch from the window.

My aunt is a balloon handler in this year’s parade. I wish I could say that she’s my zany, blue-haired, never-married eccentric aunt who is always doing crazy things but, really, she’s my young, hot, looks-better-than-me-but-has-had-two-kids aunt who is not really prone to doing crazy things but hey. Everyone is allowed some crazy every now and then.

Afterwards, we’re heading to beloved New Jersey. I really can’t wait to see my family because seeing my family means a) awesome food and b) free reign to talk about the wedding. No, seriously, they can’t get enough. To the point that sometimes even I think it’s a bit much.

M is coming home with me and this little mini-break is so, so needed. We haven’t been fighting, but we’ve been pretty disconnected. He’s been busy and I’ve been busy and thus the affection and sex and communication has been pretty nonexistent. I hate feeling like we’re roommates. I miss being us.

I’m hoping some time away from things like jobs and school and stress will bridge the small gap that’s developed between us.

Anyway, I hope you all have an awesome holiday. My food coma and I will be back on Monday, if not sooner.

I think it is great that you love your job so much. Me, I would probably totally be lured in by the bigger paycheck and insurance, if not just the sexy British accent.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

Oooh how exciting to have recruiters after you! You’ll make the right decision. As long as you are happy it will be the right one.

ya know.. i’ve been trying to pin down that feeling I have- that whole feeling where I’ll never find the man of my dreams and have what you and M have- cuz wow I’m so jealous sometimes… but your mention of zany, blue-haired, never-married eccentric aunt — i’m pretty sure that’ll be my title someday when my little brother grows up, get’s married and has a life way before me. :) ohhh damn fears!!!!

    ok- happy thanksgiving :)

I am so happy for you that you love your job so much. I totally understand how you feel. And I have no doubt that a mini break will help you and M out during this busy time (I’m sure he’s starting to get crazy stressed about finals right about now…)

  6. tia Says:

that’s really exciting about your job offer. i totally understand the health insurance thing, being self-employed.

however, something to think about: does M have health insurance and will you be able to take advantage of it when you’re married?

either way, i’m sure it’ll work out.

    have a happy thanksgiving!

  7. The Lisa Show Says:

It’s fantastic that sexy Brits are recruiting you. It’s a great ego boost even if you never take the offer.

I’m sure you and M will have a blast this week. Happy Thanksgiving! :)

  10. Princess Extraoridinaire Says:

Thanksgiving sounds like fun at your house. It ought to be fun wtching the parade as well…don’t worry too much about M and the connection issue - you are both trying to get things done before the holiday and things will calm down once you’re celebrating not only Thanksgiving but one another. Talk of the wedding will spark up a new fire and you will be okay..enjoy, Clink1

  11. Peter DeWolf Says:

    Balloon handler?

    AWESOME.

I hope that you have a great and reconnecty weekend!

  12. michelle Says:

Have a wonderful holiday my dear!

  13. Butter Says:

Have a great Thanksgiving! I’m sure this little break will be just what you and M need. Often the stresses of life can really take a toll on your energy and the is most obvious with the one you spend the most time with. Everyone gets stressed out, tired, and grumpy- a little sleep and home cooking will do you both good.

  14. Pessimistic Redhead Says:

My relationship has also been off lately. We’re spending the holiday together for the first time ever and hopefully it will be a nice little break and not something to cause even more stress.

Also, when I watch the parade, my sick ass usually wishes that one of the balloons will pop (as Big Bird did one fateful year in the early 80s). This year, I won’t! Wouldn’t want Aunty Clink to get wiped out.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  15. Ashley Says:

it is nice to feel appreciated at work - and to be doing something you love. :)

    Happy Thanksgiving Miss Clink

  16. DevilsHeaven Says:

How cool you can watch the parade through your window! I’m a little jealous.
    Have a good Turkey Day!

  17. kwarterlifecrisis Says:

I always watch the parade on tv and I’m totally gonna look for you tomorrow. And wonder which building you live in. ;) Happy Turkey-eat-until-you-can’t-hardly-move Day!

  18. Marie Says:

I want to be a balloon handler! How do you get the job?

  19. Jess Says:

That is so awesome about your job. Nothing better than having one great job and being offered another. Nice choices to have…

  24. DG Says:

  25. Kate Says:

Nothing like the thrill of being poached :-)

Glad to hear you’re loving work- it really does make it easier to handle the hours/pressure etc. I’m in a not entirely loving place with work right now, which mens I bitch and moan far more than I have a right to. End of year blues.

Hope the mini break recharges your batteries- hate that disconnected feeling! I’ve been so lucky that P doesn’t tend to work the hours I do, so we only generally have one busy/stressed out of it person..

  26. Amber Says:

It’s probably good that you’re so crazy busy at work because law school tends to hijack the souls of those we love, especially about this time of the year. Enjoy your mini-break!

  27. ruby Says:

health insurance really is the reason i was able to convince my husband to marry me.

but i think happiness in your job intrinsically is WAY WAY WAY more important than (most) anything else.

    have a lovely holiday!

  28. qu33nbee Says:

Happy Thanksgiving!!! I’m really happy that you’ve got a great job. Really really happy. I hope you’re enjoying it enough for the two of us.

  29. PrincipessaNYC26 Says:

Happy Thanksgiving!! Until now I’ve been an anonymous reader (and you have no idea how much your blog perks me up at lunchtime here in cubicle land), but I’ve broken my silence to respond to this post…

My bf and I have been living together for a year, and when the outside world is stressful, our inside world can definitely get a little distant. It’s not personal, it always passes, and the fun of getting close again makes everything OK :)

Have a wonderful Holiday, congrats on the job offer, and trust me — health insurance can definitely come in handy. Especially if you’re accident prone like me! (seriously, I got hit by a rogue gypsy cab last month. sigh)

  30. crystall Says:

Holidays are always a nice time to relax and bridge the gap so to speak… enjoy yourselves and have a happy thanksgiving.

  36. Princess of the Universe Says:

If you want parade advice, I’ve got it! I just did a post this past weekend about my experiences being in a Santa Claus parade! (I’m sure I could make up some good stuff about being a spectator too!)

  37. caitlynintherye Says:

I say you come home someday in a brand new lacy little thing, wake him up, and pounce. Roomates don’t do that, right?

Have an awesome, amazing, food-tastic holiday!

  38. verybadcat Says:

    1. Health insurance isn’t all the bee’s knees. ;-) You can feel valued when you are sick.

    2. I love the road trips our holidays are always comprised of. There is nothing to turn up the communication and affection between two busy tired people than a good car ride.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  39. TW Says:

As a long time reader of “Such Great Hights”, however hardly reading the comments. Today’s post made me think and I looked at the comments and no one else picked up on the very interesting peak into the real Clink when she said:

….”I’m happy. I feel appreciated. I feel valuable.

    This is a first (sadly).”

No one picked up on this?

  40. Beth Says:

There really is something to be said about feeling valued and appreciated at your job. It doesn’t happen constantly, so when you find that, it’s hard to let go. But health insurance…man, I’m not sure if I’d be able to choose between the 2!

I tagged you for the 7 random things meme.

  41. Ebee Says:

Totally unrelated - but does anyone know what happend to The Company Bitch?

  42. Stephanie Says:

Congrats on the job offer, even though you decided not to take it. It’s great to know you’re a hot commodity in your industry though, no?

And also, your Thanksgiving sounds just perfect for you and M. ENJOY!
