New year, new layout? January 3, 2008

Filed under: In general — Clink @ 2:17 pm

I clicked on my site today and noticed that the colors are those most closely associated with vomit.

I don’t know why it never occurred to me before but today I’m all “gah! Ack! Can’t look! What made me choose THAT?”

Which means it might be time for a design change? Maybe? If I don’t get bored and move onto another idea by tomorrow?

It’s just…how does one go about that? Suggestions? Recommendations? Requests to do it yourselves for minimal fees?

Haha, you’re too funny. I just picked the layout I liked best from the WordPress options, so… basically I’m not helpful at all. Because I’m internet challenged (I don’t even know how I set up a blog).

  2. tiff Says:

I haven’t figured out how to edit/change WordPress layouts, so I just picked the plainest one that exists. I’ve been thinking about adding a blog header for awhile now…

  3. Sarah Says:

Hey, don’t knock on this layout too hard, it’s the one I picked when I first started.

But then I realized I didn’t like it. At all.

Actually that’s a lie. I do kind of like it.

Wow, how much help am I?

  4. Michelle and the City Says:

actually i remember when i first came across your site i was like “wow i love her layout!”

of course i had no idea at the time it was a template and thought you were a design genius or something :)

  5. Sassafras Says:

I was just thinking the same thing about my layout today. I think I’m too lazy (and stupid) to actually make the change though. Sorry I can’t be of more help.

  6. Jess Says:

I like this layout, but I have to say that it is one that I have seen on several other WordPress blogs. Every time I get confused for a second and think that I’m on your blog. Maybe that means you want to stick with it as your “signature look,” but really I think it would be awesome if you had a customized theme.

However, I can’t suggest anything to you because WordPress confuses me so badly. I know it is customizable, but I don’t know how. It’s the main reason I haven’t switched to WordPress from Blogger. So, if you learn anything–post it for the sake of general knowledge?

  7. DevilsHeaven Says:

Vomit? Really? I like it. It’s kinda girly with the blue flowers, but not overtly girly.
I may have separation issue if you change it.
    But do whatever you want!

  8. Andrea Says:

    Clink,
Apparently I have poor taste because I love the brown, blue and green. Its always fun to change it up though. I am a long time reader but new commentor. Just wanted to say that I love the blog and it is you and a few others I have been reading for the past few months that has lead me to start my own.

  9. erin Says:

Tis the season for changing layouts, huh?

I actually do like your layout but, as Jess said aboev, you might want to make it more “You”. From a design perspective, I am not much help. I just use the templates in wordpress and then customized with a photo of the beautiful Chicago skyline. If you have questions on customizing photos, I might be of some assistance (it’s pretty simple).

  10. Stephanie Says:

When I’ve seen other people with this layout, I’m like, CLINK! It’s become part of you now.

But maybe it IS time for a change! I’m sure there’s some nice bloggy friend that could design you something!

  11. chasingparadise Says:

I actually really love your layout. I wish I could be of more help, but I also am one of those people who just chose one from WordPress and called it a day. I did eventually change the picture at the top, but still…that didn’t exactly take a genius.

  12. Jack Says:

I like this layout but I agree that it might be time to move on and see other layouts.

I’m happy to offer any technical assistance you might need. I’ve spent a lot of time getting to know WordPress and my own site is just a very heavily customized install of WordPress. You know where to find me. :)

  13. verybadcat Says:

Yeah, I’m a Blogger girl, so I have not the first bit of advice regarding WordPress. I love my template- the coveted three column design, but I have to change mastheads and colors every once in awhile, or I get sick of them. I do my mastheads myself- take one of my own photos, crop and resize to get the right shape and size, but I would never attempt a template or layout.

When I was hunting for my three column layout, I came across a ton of free WordPress templates. I also found some kick ass tutorials on how to import and tweak Blogger templates. I can’t imagine that the same kind of sites don’t exist for WordPress.

I love your layout, and it has become a part of your identity, but you’ve changed since you started, right? So, maybe it’s time to switch things up a bit here.

My two hints for you are: figure out how to save a backup of your blog before you do ANYTHING, and set aside some quiet time to make these kinds of changes. It can take hours, depending on what you’re trying to do, and I’m sure you’re like me, and there is NO WAY you’d leave your blog half done. Oh, and I’ve heard that a lot of people register testing blogs where they can screw around with stuff without having to work on the live blog.

  14. Recovering Overachiever Says:

I like the layout. Could you change the colors but keep the layout?

Other than that, I’m no help. I have no idea how to design anything (unfortunately).

  15. brookem Says:

Ha, welp. I am absolutely not your girl when it comes to this stuff (hence why I have a “why technology drives me to drink” tag on about 3/4 of my posts). But. I did recently kind of get the hang of uploading a new header on the templates where you can customize your own. So, if you need help with something like that, let me know! And we can cheers the new layout together afterwards! (or during, etc.)

  16. Tina Vaziri Says:

Maybe you’ll find a cute one that you will like from these sites:

    http://www.freewordpressthemes.com/

  17. Mia Elizabeth Says:

I felt the exact same way as Michelle.. I assumed you just whipped this layout up yourself, and it was one of the first things I loved about your blog.

But if you really want to change it, most of the wordpress layouts you can modify with your own header image, which is kind of fun.

  18. Princess Extraoridinaire Says:

I like the brown - I like browna dn pink too but then again if you saw my blog you’d be blinded by pink and you’d gag - many do…anyhow..I’ve gotten used to your blog and I like it…not much help am I?

  19. Nilsa S. Says:

I love your layout and you happen to share it with another one of my favorite bloggers (thus, doubly good memories associated with it!). However, change can be good. I went to istockphoto.com and did a little tinkering to come up with my own masthead. But, I’m by no means an HTML expert and therefore would feel bad about offering services I cannot fulfill!

  20. The Lisa Show Says:

I actually really love this layout. But more and more bloggers seem to be using it now and I always feel a little lost because when I see this design, I expect the blog to be yours. Wish I could help you but I wouldn’t know where to begin. I just get free Blogger templates. Can’t wait to see the new layout!

  21. mcgee Says:

I always liked this layout…totally doesn’t bring to mind vomit. Until now. Thanks.

If you do a new one, what about your favorite color combo of brown and pink? Or would that still induce vomit to you?

    Happy New Year Clink!!!

  22. qu33nbee Says:

No for real. I love your layout, I’ve often wanted to use it on my site, but decided not to because that would be blasphemous because The Clink uses it on Her Site, and umm..that’s just not okay.

  23. strange bird Says:

Well, I did tell someone a long time ago who was considering wordpress that I really liked it except for the fact that the layouts were incredibly difficult to customize (I think it was Meta). I like the layout, but I can understand wanting to change. I actually want to change mine, but don’t have time to come up with anything new. So my advice? Change it, but get help from someone who’s figured out how you can make it yours!

  24. littlespoon Says:

    I like simple colors…girly colors.

Now all I’m going to think until the design change is vomit. Awesome.

  25. mikesgotnothin Says:

When i see this layout in other places, I’m like, “wait, they took clink’s.”

  26. distracted spunk Says:

I got tired of my old layout, and Ashley actually helped me out. I just took one of the clean, neat layouts that wordpress offered and her masthead.

By the way - you can download the themes, but you have to pay like…10 bucks or something to actually use it. I love WordPress, but not that much.

  27. Lioness Says:

This made me laugh! Hallo, I’m in vet school in Potugal and would like to kindly ask you to teach our animals - and nationals, if it’s not too much of an imposition - how to vomit in these pretty colours. Honestly. What sort of vomit have you been lucky enough to experience?? If you’re fed up with the design and need something fab for the new year, by all means, this is your home, but if you’re worried abt scatological associations fret no more. These colours are lovely and look brilliant together, unlike the thing you mention. I have pictures that prove it.

Happy New Year, Clink. May 2008 be kind to all of us.

  28. Anna Says:

I know a little bit, Clink! Just a little.
    Email me if you like!

  29. kwarterlifecrisis Says:

I like your layout! It was one that I liked when I was looking but was like ‘damn, Clink already took that one.’ Ijust picked one of the templates for mine and then made myself a personalized header. It’s crazy easy and I would be willing to make one for you if you sent me some of those homemade Oreos in return. Maybe? :)

  30. Each Says:

    i dont hate it.

but, if you need a new change for a new year? Pink is MY favourite colour, just saying…

  31. Charl Says:

Vomit colors? Well, maybe if it had some orange.

We, er, have the same template, Clink. And god it leaves me disoriented, too. I need to read bits of text or the header to figure out where I am.

But. Somehow I associate this one with Such Great Heights more than My Big Mouth (my blog). So I guess I’ll suggest that you keep it.

I actually loved this template the first time I set my eyes on it, esp the floral thing on the top. Now I’m slightly bored with it, so there’s potentially a change in the offing.

    Anyway, your call.
